Why is it not possible in Total Commander to pass a selected file to an application as a start parameter

Because TC does not provide a way to detect the file or folder currently selected in the active tab. A long time ago, I added an item on TC's wishlist but it has not been added yet (AKAIK).
Detecting the selected file can only be done in Windows Explorer and Directory Opus. Not in TC, file dialog box of QAPconnect file managers. -

I have some examples which fetches TC entries using AHK.

This is a very long thread on TC forum with many topics related to Folders Popup/Quick Access Popup interaction with TC. But the "selected item" topic was discussed on this thread:

At some point, there was an item on the TC wishlist but I can't find it anymore.
