QCE files in QAP folder

  Seems like QCE puts files into the QAP folder.
  
  I found several QCE files there recently and deleted them, thinking I unpacked QCE to the wrong folder. 
  
  But new files QCE files show up again in my QAP folder:
  

  • ...\Portable\QuickAccessPopup\QuickClipboardEditor-setup.ini
    
  • ...\Portable\QuickAccessPopup\QCE-DB.db
    
  • ...\Portable\QuickAccessPopup\QuickClipboardEditor.ini
    
  • ...Portable\QuickAccessPopup\QuickClipboardEditor-backup-20230304.ini
    

  Looking into the file QuickClipboardEditor.ini in both folders:

  • In the (portable) QCE folder the entry QCETempFolder points to ...\QuickClipboardEditor\TEMP
    
  • In the (portable) QAP folder the entry QCETempFolder points to ...\QuickAccessPopup\TEMP
    

  
  
  I am using the portable version of both.

  I think I found what could be the cause of this issue. I think it is not a QCE issue but a QAP issue. I'll move this post to the QAP support section.

  When you create an Application favorite in QAP for a "portable" application, depending on the application design it can be important to specify to the "working folder" or "start in" folder.
  
  In the case of Quick Clipboard Editor, you need to set this folder in the "Edit favorite", "Advanced Settings" tab.
  
  This would not be required if QCE was installed with the Setup program instead of the ZIP file.

  I'll chime in on this one, even if Jean explained it.
  
  This is not a bug in QCE or QAP.
  I've seen this lots of times with applications.
  
  This is normal behavior if the app launched just thinks "I'll write stuff where I'm started from".
  
  It is especially important to be aware of this when running "portable" applications (ie, is NOT installed on the system) that do not read/write to the Registry.

  Still hard to understand for me.
  I always thought portable applications by definition do not write system/config data anywhere except in their own (launch) directory. QAP and QCE are both portable applications…

  That is up to the application, or the "packager" that make it portable, see f.ex. PortableApps.
  (Or, some apps have a switch to tell it go portable).
  
  Perfectly normal behavior if the app just see the "run" command from QAP or other run commands like WIN+r, then it will be started in the context it's fired.
  I have several small apps triggered by QAP where I have to tell them where to start (startup dir).

  Ok, I understood how to fix bad portable behavior in QAP favorite settings.
  If I do not set the "Start in" directory in QAP a portable app might be led to believe the QAP directory is its home.
  
  On the other hand, if I create a shortcut on my Windows desktop it seems that Windows sets the start directory automatically.
  
  This is maybe why I never cared about the Advanced Settings in QAP.

  It depends how this shortcut was created. I guess if you open the shortcut properties you will see that the "Starting folder" is set to the proper folder.
