A beta user is reporting this error. I could not reproduce it.

Are there any beta users getting this error message when checking for update with QAP?

Tried it a few times, everything was fine.
Maybe a local firewall issue? Happens if e.g. a local firewall blocks Internet traffic (or maybe an overprotective AV product)...

I've tested v9.9.2.8 beta (64-bits) portable and v9.9.2.9 beta (64-bits) portable -- I do not see the update error with either version.
