When available, the feature is an optional setting that must be "enabled." Sometimes the feature is flagged as "beta" or there is a vague warning about "conflicts" with other apps.
If enabled, you choose a "screen edge region." At a minimum, choices I've seen are Left Edge, Top Edge, Right Edge, and Bottom Edge. Other apps offer only the choice of "screen corners" - Upper Left, Upper Right, Bottom Right, and Bottom Left. And some apps offer all 8 of these options. Some apps allow you to choose multiple screen edge regions while others limit the choice to one.
Also, some apps offer an optional "delay" setting. The app is triggered immediately when bumping the screen edge OR only after a user-defined interval (for example, 200 milliseconds) with a bump and rest action. I have one app (an old, simple clipboard manager I use every day that started this conversation thread) with a slight twist. You bump the screen, a small button peeks out, and you left-click the button to trigger.
I attached a screenshot image of my app along with its settings dialogue. I'm not sure if its the exact same app and/or version, but it appears to be available as a free download here:

I don't know if providing user-defined "screen edge regions" as part of the "screen bump" functionality makes it more difficult to implement, but it allows users to trigger specific apps depending on the screen edge that is bumped. This way you know what to expect and there are no conflicts.
